(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Officials at Brookfield Zoo Chicago say they and law enforcement are investigating a Data Breach of its network earlier this year.

Dr. Michael Adkesson, President and CEO of Brookfield Zoo Chicago says they became aware of some suspicious activity on their computer network earlier this year.

“We became aware back in January of just some suspicious activity on one of our networks. We immediately engaged local law enforcement authorities, engaged our cybersecurity expert teams that we contract with,” Adkesson said.

He points out the system breached contained information about employees, former employees and beneficiaries…not the general public or zoo members.

“Entirely staff focused. There's no indication that this was any access to any of our guest information or any of our partners or benefactors or anything like that.”

Adkesson says there were no operational disruptions, and no evidence information was used for any identity thefts.

The people affected have been notified and offered free credit monitoring and identity restoration services as a precaution.
