(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Police and the Secret Service were out on Friday talking to residents in the area of the United Center to let them know about security preparations including street closures, for next month's Democratic National Convention.

We understand that this is a large event, but we also understand that Chicago does large events all the time, whether it's NASCAR, whether it's going to be the marathon, whether it's going to be one of the many conventions that come to town with hundreds of thousands of people, we can handle this,” said Glen Brooks, director of Community Policing for Chicago Police.

“This is something that we regularly do and we're looking forward for the convention.”

Secret Service Assistant Special Agent Joel Heffernan says the canvassing event is a follow-up to what police and Secret Service did in April.

Chicago Police, the Secret Service, and FBI, fanning out in the area around the United Center, speaking to residents.

“This is not only the Secret Service, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, but many city agencies. We have the Department of buildings, we have OEMC, we have the Chicago Police Department and other departments that are here really to make sure that we knock on each and every door for those residents that are going to be directly impacted here,” Brooks said.

They went door-to-door talking to residents and handing out brochures that had, among other information, a QR code connecting people to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications for more information.
