The Chicago Cubs are down bad and likely sellers leading into Tuesday's deadline. Plenty of names have been mentioned in the rumor mill , and the roster depth is continuing to thin.

Per reports , the Cubs have placed catcher Tomas Nido on the 10-day IL with a knee sprain. The move is retroactive to July 25. In his place, the Cubs have selected the contract of catcher Christian Bethancourt from Triple-A Iowa. Finally, the Cubs moved RHP Ben Brown to the 60-day IL to make room for Bethancourt on the 40-man roster.

Nido has been ok since he was signed by the Cubs back in mid-June. Although it meant the end of Yan Gomes' tenure in Chicago, the Cubs desperately needed a capable catcher behind the plate to join Miguel Amaya. Not only has Nido been fine, but Amaya's bat has taken off since the move happened.

With the Cubs, Nido is only slashing .128/.143/.234 with minimal offensive output. Replacing that production shouldn't be difficult, but the chemistry developed with the pitching staff is the real loss with Nido hitting the injured list.

As for Bethancourt, the veteran was signed to a minor-league deal at the beginning of July. The veteran has service over nine MLB seasons and is decent depth for the Cubs. Bethancourt wasn't special in 2024 with the Miami Marlins, but put together two decent seasons in 2022 and 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays. Now, the Panama native will split duties with Amaya behind the dish.

Ben Brown's addition to the 60-day IL certainly feels disheartening for Cubs fans, but Brown has been out since the beginning of June. He can still return in early August and be a jolt to the pitching staff. However, there is still a lot of concern with Brown's health as of the middle of July. If he continues to progress positively, he could return this season. That said, it feels like a big "if" at this point.

The Cubs begin their three-game set in Kansas City on Friday night. Kyle Hendricks takes the mound for the Cubs against RHP Brady Singer for the Royals.
