The Seattle Mariners sent 11 men to the plate in their first-inning ambush of Chicago White Sox starter Drew Thorpe. The inning ended with Jared Shuster recording the final out and Chicago down 8-0. When the dust settled on Friday's series opener, the South Siders had lost their 12th consecutive game as the Mariners drubbed the White Sox by a score of 10-0. The loss dropped the Sox to 27-79 on the season.

Thorpe entered the game on a streak of five consecutive quality starts, allowing no more than two runs. Over that span, he surrendered five earned runs and three homers over 30.1 innings. But on Friday, he allowed eight runs and three homers while recording only two outs in a nightmarish first inning.

    Disaster

Drew Thorpe didn't have his best command and continually placed his fastball over the plate. Mariners hitters took advantage, with Josh Rojas breaking the game open with a three-run homer. Seattle led 6-0 after Rojas's blast until Dylan Moore and Victor Robles added solo homers, going back-to-back-back.

Jared Shuster recorded 12 outs, allowing just two earned runs on a homer by Jorge Polanco in the fourth. Sammy Peralta relieved Shuster with two outs in the fifth and finished the game. Peralta allowed no runs on three hits and two walks.

White Sox hitters managed seven hits, six of which Mariners starter George Kirby scattered over seven shutout innings. Brooks Baldwin notched his first career double in the fifth, one of three White Sox' two-baggers. Chicago's disgraceful offense didn't reach third base and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

    News and Notes

The White Sox are unlikely to trade all-star Garrett Crochet after the lefty demanded a contract extension to pitch in the playoffs.

The St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, and up to 10 teams are reportedly engaged in trade discussions with the White Sox regarding a trade for starting pitcher Erick Fedde.

Friday's 10-0 loss marked the Sox' 13th shutout defeat of the season.
