(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A nonprofit that spreads love through food will do a lot of cooking on Saturday ahead of National Lasagna Day.

In the four years since Lasagna Love got started, it has grown to more than 56,000 volunteers around the world — including 1,500 in the Chicago area.

Board Member Wendi Taylor Nations is one of them. She bakes and delivers lasagnas for people struggling with finances or their health, often focusing her attention on cancer patients.

Nations said she had no idea how many people were struggling with food insecurity in her Lincoln Park neighborhood until she started working with the nonprofit.

Some of her fellow volunteers are putting on their aprons to help make 10,000 lasagnas for National Lasagna Day on Monday.

On Saturday, they cooked at Portage Park’s Schoolhouse Kitchen from 9 a.m. to noon. The organization will hold another cooking event at West Dundee’s St. James’ Episcopal Church from 4 – 5 p.m.

Over the years, Nations said she’s made all kinds of lasagna, and she said she’s texted or emailed recipients about allergies and to figure out if they would like meat, veggies, cheese — or even a dessert version.
