CHICAGO — A man and a three-month-old baby were critically injured after two people opened fire on their vehicle Saturday afternoon on the city’s West Side.

According to Chicago police, the shooting unfolded just after 4:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of West 26th Street, in Little Village.

Officers say the two victims, a 21-year-old man and a 3-month-old boy, were inside a car in the area when another vehicle approached and two armed men exited and opened fire.

Police say the baby suffered a gunshot wound to his chest, and the man suffered several gunshot wounds to his body. The man is believed to be the baby’s father. Both victims were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Following the shooting, the two gunmen fled the scene in an unknown direction. Police found bullet holes in the windshield and on top of the victims’ car.

Officers say an investigation into the shooting is now underway, and no arrests have been made. Police have not yet released descriptions of the two suspects or disclosed if they have been able to identify a possible motive.

A prayer vigil for the victims and their families is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday in Little Village, at West 26th and South Whipple Street.

Kristian Armendariz of the Little Village Community Council says the neighborhood is tired of incidents like this one.

“It’s unfortunate that these situations keep occurring in our neighborhood,” he said. “We (just) had a ‘peace run,’ to put an end to this violence and promote peace among our neighborhood members and colleagues.

“It’s just a call for us to continue and keep pushing for peace.”

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact CPD Area Four Detectives at 312-746-8251, or dial 911.
