Habitat For Humanity breaks ground on largest Chicago project in West Pullman

On a rainy Monday morning, Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a 20-townhome project in the heart of West Pullman.

This is the largest real estate development to date for Habitat for Humanity Chicago, with the goal of improving the housing market and the neighborhood image.

"Being here today represents more than just building homes, it's about building hope, strengthening communities and fostering brighter future for families in need," Shana Hayes, chief social impact officer for Northern Trust, said.

Located across the street from the future 12-acre Morgan Park Commons, these new two-story townhomes will have their own garages, community green spaces, and three- and four-bedroom floor plans.

"This development by Habitat for Humanity continues legacy and is about building dreams, fostering stability and continued to create opportunities for home ownerships which is always been the fabric of this Ward," 21st Ward Alderman Ronnie Mosley said.

This is a group commitment, organizers and community leaders say, to invest in the West Pullman neighborhood.

"We do not do this work alone," Jennifer Parks, executive director for Habitat Chicago. "This work is done in relationship with others, a big relationship we have is the far south side coalition... They are looking at all different aspects of community health when you thing of transportation housing transportation this is the work that habitat does. And how we all come together to do this work."

Construction of the first block of four townhomes is expected to be completed next year. All units will be sold by Habitat Chicago through their Affordable Homeownership Program.
