CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications announced Monday that more than 250 cooling centers were being activated in preparation for this week's expected excessive heat.

According to AccuWeather, this week’s heat indices could be at or near 100 degrees. In addition, residents were advised to be aware of the possibility of severe weather, including high winds, possible tornadoes, hail and flash flooding.

Residents can call 311 to find their nearest cooling centers, and a full map of Chicago’s cooling centers can be found below:

The National Weather Service said it expects the hottest days to be Wednesday and Thursday as humidity continues to build in the area.

Signs of heat stroke include: a fever at or above 103 degrees, dizziness, nausea, a throbbing headache, a rapid and strong pulse, and skin that’s red, hot and dry.

The city of Chicago encouraged its residents to stay indoors, never leave pets or children in a closed car, and to check on family, friends and neighbors.
