Chicago White Sox's dismal season knows no bounds as horrific year continues

Just how bad have the 2024 Chicago White Sox been? The South Siders's 8-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals Monday night was the team's 15th in a row, a franchise single-season record.

The previous record of 14 was set in June... of this season. The White Sox , currently 27-82, are on pace to lose an all-time MLB -worst 122 games. The Onion couldn't help but poke fun at baseball's worst team, publishing a story titled : MLB Reminds White Sox that Game Televised.

Bobby Witt Jr. was the Royals hero on Monday, smashing a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning to cap a furious Kansas City comeback. The Royals selected Witt second in the 2019 MLB Draft and he's currently the second favorite to win the American League MVP award.

“He's a superstar,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said . “You see how he impacts the game in every single facet of the game.” Meanwhile, Chicago selected Andrew Vaughn with the third pick in the 2019 Draft. He's currently slashing .234/.289/.383.

The White Sox have already started the trade deadline festivities in a major way, trading cost-controlled starter Erick Fedde (3.11 ERA, 108 Ks) to the Dodgers, volatile reliever Michael Kopech and veteran outfielder Tommy Pham to the Cardinals.

Chicago received former top-100 prospect Miguel Vargas and minor leaguers IF Jeral Perez and OF Alexander Albertus. ESPN gave the Dodgers a B+ for the trade, the Cardinals an A, and the White Sox a D.

The big piece remaining for White Sox GM Chris Getz and the Chicago front office is breakout pitcher Garret Crochet, who surprisingly leads the majors in strikeouts after the team converted him to a starter this offseason.

Getz recently indicated a communications breakdown with Crochet's camp, who wants promises of an extension if he's to get traded to a contender and continue to shatter his career high in innings pitched.

"I was a little surprised and taken aback by how they went about it, considering I had a conversation with his agent the night before," Getz said on Monday . "That's not exactly the tactic I would have taken, being a former player, just because the dialogue has been so honest and real and careful and mindful of his career."

Former MLB GM Jim Bowden and current MLB writer for the Athletic Jim Bowden posed an insane theory on X , suggesting that he could move to the minors for the rest of the season, if he is not traded.

While Bowden's idea sounds like a guaranteed grievance, the Crochet situation is certainly one to monitor ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline. Other players could also be on the move, but many candidates (like outfielder Andrew Benintendi) are woefully underperforming.

"For some reason, some players out there think they’re gonna get traded," said former Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen on the team's postgame show. "Who’d want you? For real?”
