CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — First-degree murder, among other charges, have been filed against a 32-year-old South Side man in connection to an attempted robbery and fatal shooting of Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy Raphael Wordlaw.

Antionette Ursitti, the Chicago Police Department’s chief of detectives, said Cordarrow Thompson fired about 69 shots at Wordlaw, who was off-duty at the time. Just one of those shots hit.

“This offender was armed with two firearms and simultaneously unloaded a barrage of bullets on the deputy, but he was able to get off one shot, which did injure our offender and was, ultimately, why we were able to locate him and take him into custody,” Ursitti said.

She said Thompson showed up at a hospital with a leg wound. When police were called, which is standard practice when gunshot victims come in, he refused to talk and took a ride-share to another hospital.

Police were called again, and by that time, Ursitti said investigators had seen surveillance video. Officials said they saw Thompson with the leg wound, and DNA connected him to the scene.

Chris Amon, the special agent in charge of the ATF in Chicago, said the firearms used in the shooting had a “conversion device” that allowed them to fire over 30 shots in two seconds.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said the deputy was proud to be following in his father’s footsteps. He was a Chicago police officer.
