"He's been a liar ever since I've known him" – Scottie Pippen on how Jerry Krause tried to lowball him after the 1984 Draft

Jerry Krause had his share of disagreements with Chicago Bulls players, which is why stars such as Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were at odds with him. The latter's issues with the former Bulls GM stem from the 1987 Draft when Chicago agreed to a trade with the Seattle Supersonics to acquire the Arkansas native.

    Pippen vs. Krause

Krause was impressed by the University of Central Arkansas product before the Draft. He did his homework and scouted Pippen , aware that pairing him up with MJ would be special.

"The thought of this guy playing alongside Michael (Jordan) caused this scout's mind to work overtime. The quickest, longest-armed, most tremendous lateral quickness combination in the game… We had to get this guy," Krause said in an unfinished and unpublished memoir.

Despite Jerry's admiration for Pip, Scottie revealed that the then-Bulls GM showed his true colors right after the Draft by trying to pull a fast one on him.

"I get drafted at fifth, then he wants to turn around and say, 'Well, we have to pay you as the eighth pick because we had the eighth pick.' He pissed me off from the very first. He's been a liar ever since I've known him," Pippen said in the book, "Blood by the Horns: The Long Strange Ride of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls."

The 1996 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year added that being young at the time, he chose not to be vocal. Scottie knew a big challenge was in front of him, so instead, he opted to look, listen, and learn rather than lash out.

In response to Pippen's claim, Krause said there was no truth to his words. Jerry reiterated that they traded up for him and that he would be paid accordingly as the fifth overall pick.

The architect of the Bulls dynasty

Krause knew some of his decisions would not sit well with Jordan, Pippen, Phil Jackson, and fans. He was often seen as a villain, especially after breaking up the Bulls dynasty in 1998, when they won their sixth championship in eight years and completed their second three-peat.

Still, regardless of the controversies he got himself into, Jerry remains the brains behind the Bulls ' all-time great NBA run. This is why he was inducted into the 2017 Basketball Hall of Fame posthumously. Like him or not, Jordan, Pippen, and the rest of the iconic Chicago squad would not have come together had it not been for Krause's efforts.
