CDC reports salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to several Florida-based cucumber producers.

The CDC has reported 449 salmonella cases linked to the contaminated cucumbers across 31 states and Washington, D.C., with 125 hospitalizations but no fatalities. A recall has been issued for the tainted cucumbers and the CDC has stated that all contaminated products have been removed from shelves.

Bedner Growers, Inc., located in Boynton Beach, Florida, and Thomas Produce Company in Boca Raton, Florida, have been recognized as probable sources of the outbreak, according to the FDA.

According to the CDC, salmonella infections typically cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Symptoms usually last 4-7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Certain individuals, such as young children, senior citizens, and immunocompromised individuals are more susceptible to severe symptoms and complications.
