Northwestern’s $300M Kellogg upgrade: Where business gets a fancy facelift

Northwestern University is preparing for a major transformation at its Kellogg School of Management . The institution aims to develop a new state-of-the-art facility as part of its $600 million fundraising campaign. The new building is set to replace the Allen Center, which, post-demolition, will provide a modern space designed to blend in-person and virtual education.

The planned facility, located in Evanston, Illinois, is expected to house 246,420 square feet, nearly doubling the capacity of its predecessor. According to the Chicago Business Journal , the project's estimated cost is $300 million, with fundraising efforts already securing $182.6 million of the target.

Key features of the new Kellogg School facility will include over 21,000 square feet of classroom space, with technology integrations like "back-row" LCD displays to connect remote students. Additionally, it boasts 3,455 square feet of production studios, enabling faculty to produce varied educational content, from podcasts to interactive sessions.

Northwestern's commitment to technological advancements is underscored by a $20 million National Science Foundation grant to enhance tech innovation predictions and acceleration, as reported by the Chicago Business Journal . This effort is part of a broader strategy, involving collaborations with Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, to support Chicago's emergent tech ecosystem.

The new facility is designed by Kohn, Pederson, and Fox Associates of New York City, and construction is anticipated to begin following Allen Center's closure after Thanksgiving and its subsequent demolition early next year. The building is expected to welcome its first students by 2027.
