Isabelle Harrison is establishing her role with Sky after injury
Isabelle Harrison is new to the Sky. Yes, former Sky coach/general manager James Wade signed her in 2023, but a season-ending injury before the regular season even began delayed Harrison’s debut. Not only was she unable to play with the Sky last season, but she spent much of the year rehabbing in Texas.
Chicago outdoors: Chicago River night heron, Wisconsin grouse drumming up, odd Bourbonnais bee
Notes come from around Chicago outdoors and beyond. Brian Carroll photographed this night heron in the rain Tuesday on the Riverwalk. “There are a few the regularly hang out between Wolf Point and LaSalle [Street],” he emailed. The rebound of black-crowned night herons has been remarkable, especially on the Chicago River system.
Bill Daley slams Johnson's claim of 'decades of disinvestment' by past mayors
Mayor Brandon Johnson has blamed “decades of disinvestment and deliberate neglect” for the violence plaguing Chicago. He has accused his predecessors of “tolerating Black death” and “running this city into the ground” financially and ignoring the long-festering pension crisis. The blame game doesn’t sit...
Wild docuseries 'Mafia Spies' details how CIA hired Chicago Outfit thugs to take out Castro
In the early 1960s, the CIA enlisted the services of Chicago Outfit gangsters Sam Giancana and Johnny Roselli to orchestrate the murder of Cuba’s Communist leader Fidel Castro. Let’s take a moment to inhale the sheer insanity of that statement. By the mid-1970s, Castro was still in power,...

Racist trolls don't skip a beat after a violent July Fourth weekend
My heart sank as I read through numerous accounts of the horrific violence in Chicago during the long July Fourth holiday weekend. With each description of the carnage — from victims suffering multiple gunshot wounds, to reports of drive-by shootings, to young victims injured in a mass shooting, to dozens of bullet casings found at the scene — my heart grew heavier.
Don't soak water customers with big rate increases
People should not struggle to pay their water bills even as private companies make big profits. Illinois should close the spigot on excessive costs. Like some other states, Illinois has seen private companies snap up municipal water and wastewater operations and then raise rates for consumers, forcing some people to ration their water use. Since 2013, the two biggest private water companies in the state, Aqua Illinois and Illinois American Water, have purchased 59 public water systems and have passed $402 million in acquisition costs onto their customers, according to the Citizens Utility Board.

Crickets, katydids and thumping bass: A wild stew of sounds is coming from Millennium Park
To most people, the sound of Chicago is the bat cracking at Wrigley Field, children splashing along the lakefront, or the L train rumbling overhead. To Giovanni Aloi and Chris Hunter, the city sounds like that and much more. On Saturday afternoon on the Great Lawn of Millennium Park, the pair will present original compositions that mesh the urban environment with the natural one — a 90-minute soundscape that will transform wildlife sounds, from cicadas to birds, into aural compositions.

Youth organizations helping kids overcome trauma are part of the remedy for violent crime
Growing up, I didn’t think I’d be where I am today. I was raised in Chatham before moving to Hyde Park for high school, and my childhood led me to disengage from school. I averaged 40 absences every year, and my GPA was under 2.0. My future was defined by those statistics — no one saw me as more than those numbers — until I was introduced to The Support Group.
