    Illinois Brews @ Bowes to benefit Elgin parks and rec

    The Elgin Parks and Recreation Foundation’s 13th annual Illinois Brews @ Bowes fundraiser will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Bowes Creek Country Club, 1250 Bowes Creek Blvd., Elgin.

    More than two dozen vendors will be serving Illinois-brewed craft beers, spirits, seltzers and non-alcoholic beer as part of the event, which raises money for the Elgin Parks and Recreation Department to pay for things not covered by its budget and to provide more opportunities for kids, especially those who are at-risk, according to the event’s website.

    Tickets are $55 for general admission and $75 for early VIP admission.

    West Dundee Village Board recognizes student weightlifter

    West Dundee declared Aug. 19 to be Sophie Ann Baker Day in recognition of the accomplishments made by the student-athlete who’s in seventh grade at Dundee Middle School.

    In June, Baker placed third in her events at the USA Weightlifting National Championships in Pittsburgh, according to a proclamation issued by the village board.

    Baker took up weightlifting and training at the age of 8. She also is an honors student, an award-winning CrossFit competitor, record-setting soccer player and a basketball player.

    Carpentersville lights village hall for young Malan patient

    The village of Carpentersville lit its village hall in yellow on Aug. 19 to recognize a young resident’s battle with a rare disease.

    Nicole Poustka Ivelic, mother of 5-year-old Noah, who has Malan Syndrome, acknowledged the village’s action in a social media post. The symbolic gesture made the family feel they are not alone on their journey to address Noah’s condition, Ivelic said.

    “I am really proud of my community,” Ivelic told The Courier-News.

    According to the Malan Syndrome Foundation website, the malady is “a rare genetic disorder that is the result of a change in the NFIX gene and is characterized by overgrowth, intellectual disability, vision and/or hearing impairment, skeletal anomalies, epilepsy and anxiety.” Aug. 19 was Malan Syndrome Awareness Day.

    Elgin seeking applicants for police department civilian board

    The deadline to apply to become a member of the city of Elgin’s Civilian Review Board is Tuesday, Sept. 9.

    Members evaluate the Elgin Police Department’s practices and ensure there is transparency and equity in law enforcement activities, according to a news release.

    Its primary functions include reviewing and assessing the department’s efforts to promote racial, gender and cultural diversity in officer recruitment and training. The board also provides an objective review of civilian complaints and looks at the consistency of disciplinary measures imposed by the department.

    Get a Cone With A Cop Tuesday at South Elgin McDonald’s

    South Elgin police will be hosting Cone with a Cop from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at the Bear Family McDonald’s, 100 N. McLean Blvd., South Elgin.

    The event will be an opportunity for the community to meet South Elgin police officers and enjoy a complimentary cone, according to a post on the village’s Facebook page.

    Nature journaling classes at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center

    Hawthorne Hill Nature Center in Elgin is holding nature journaling classes in which participants learn how to use the technique as a way to connect with the natural world, a course description on its website said.

    Students will spend time sketching, painting and writing about their observations. No prior experience is necessary and materials will be provided.

    Sessions are set for 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. The cost is $10 per session for Elgin residents and $15 for nonresidents.

    16th annual car show being held Sept. 7 at Raceway Woods

    The nonprofit Midwest Racing Preservation Association will host the 16th annual Meadowdale Motorsports & Memories Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Raceway Woods, Route 31, Carpentersville.

    Registration to show vehicles is $20 through Monday, Sept. 2, and $25 the day of the event. The show is free to view.

    War on Wheels bike ride event benefits CASA Kane County

    Registration is underway for The War on Wheels: Cruisin’ for CASA Kane County bike ride fundraiser will start at various times Sunday, Sept. 8, from Sammy’s Bikes in St. Charles.

    Cyclists of all skill levels can choose from scenic routes that cover 65 miles departing at 7 a.m., 35 miles departing at 9 a.m. and 10 miles departing at 10:30 a.m., with all riders eventually returning to where they started, according to a press release. After the rides,there will be a celebratory gathering at noon with complimentary food and refreshments provided by an on-site food truck.
