Mosquito control can help prevent spread of dengue fever
ATHENS -- As overnight temperatures increase during the summer, so do mosquito populations, bringing with them the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. In late June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that the U.S. is seeing an increased risk of dengue fever, a sometimes fatal viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. This disease has been across much of South and Central America and the Caribbean, and with about 1,500 cases, the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has declared a public health emergency over dengue. ...

DECATUR -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Monday the promotion of Catherine Jordan to manager of the GBI’s Central Regional Crime Lab. Georgia Man Arrested on Drug Charges in Chattooga County
Summerville, Georgia Police arrested a McGinnis Circle man – on several felony drug warrants over the weekend. On Sunday, police went to the residence of 52-year-old Billy Ray Hill, and found him sitting in a chair on the front porch. Hill admitted to officers that he had drugs inside the house and he gave police voluntary consent to search the residence. Inside the residence police found suspected methamphetamine and drug related objects. Hill told police he rarely uses meth but keeps it, in order to trade it to women for sexual favors.

Athens, GA Officials Considering Changes to Trash Collection that Might End Options to Self-Haul
An Athens-Clarke County Commission committee is considering whether to recommend changes to trash collection in the area outside the old Athens city limits as an upcoming action item for the full commission. Those changes could see some residents in the county’s General Service District, formerly unincorporated Clarke County, lose their currently preferred private trash hauler. Additionally, the proposed changes could mean the end of self-hauling by residents who take their own household trash to the Athens-Clarke County landfill.
