Multiple wildfires are burning across California. One particularly terrifying situation was caught on an Alert California tower camera near Chico, California. A ‘firenado’ formed in the middle of the wildfire.

The firenado spun up on Thursday, July 25, 2024. The firenado was recorded in the Park Fire , which has burned over 164,000 and is only 3% contained. The fire is nearly twice the size of Sacramento.

A firenado occurs when intense rising heat mixes with a turbulent wind. The mixing forms little eddies of air, that can form a column of fire. The development is much like a tornado developing from a thunderstorm.

The main difference, firenadoes form near the ground rather than dropping from a cloud. A firenado is also known as a fire vortex.

The western wildfires are bringing smoke to the Ozarks. Air quality has been reduced across the area.
