CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Some of the country’s best junior golfers are in Chicopee this week as the city hosts the American Junior Golf Association for a sixth consecutive year.

Chicopee Country Club is a celebrated stop on the AJGA tour as the nation’s best golfers ages 12 to 19.

The official name of the tournament is the FM Global Championship presented by the John D Mineck Foundation. 96 golfers were at the club on Tuesday for practice rounds ahead of the 54-hole, stroke play event that runs Wednesday through Friday.

It’s a loaded field with 17 past AJGA champions and six players committed to play in college along with 12 Massachusetts natives. This is the sixth consecutive year the association has hosted a tournament at Chicopee Country Club. 22News asked the tournament’s director what keeps bringing them back.

“Great course in a fantastic location. A lot of our juniors are from New England so it’s a centralized location and easy to travel. The community just loves the event. Mike ONeil and Virginia Roback do a fantastic job of rallying local volunteers and support from local organizations,” said Andrew Wagner.

He also had a lot to say about the qualify of Chicopee Country Club and the specific challenge it presents these players.

The tournament begins Wednesday morning with the first tee-time set for 7 a.m. They will cut 36 holes on Thursday night, with the championship round running on Friday. Spectators are welcome and the Association and Country Club are both eager to host the community and give these juniors a big-tournament feel. Admission to watch is free.
