CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – There’s no question about it… it has been a very hot summer! So, how should you take care of your lawn during this intense summer heat?
Signs of heat stroke in dogs and ways to avoid these symptoms It really comes down to how and when you water your lawn and also how high you cut your grass.
While your lawn may have been nice and green early on, the very hot weather we’ve been having lately and the strong July sun angle may be causing it to start to turn brown. That’s why it’s important to know when you should be watering your lawn.
Gary Courchesne of G&H Landscaping told 22News when is the best time to water your lawn, “Early morning and only early morning, unless it’s absolutely necessary to water during the day because if you water at night time it promotes diseases and it’s not good for the turf overall.”
Courchesne says when you water during the middle of the day a lot of the water ends up evaporating and less of if benefits your lawn. He says when temperatures are up around 90 degrees you should water your lawn every day.
The length that you cut your lawn is also very important right now.
“Cut high again, back to that four inches. It seems excessive and in some turfs, it will be. If you get a fine fescue, it will start to lay down a little bit but it’s still better than brown grass… and cut it as often as you can. Don’t wait for it to grow six inches and cut it down to four,” said Courchesne.
In this heat, you should water your lawn for about a half hour to 45 minutes each day.
