CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Sky watchers are in for a treat this weekend, as July’s full moon nicknamed the “Buck Moon” will grace the night sky.

Mild drought declared in western Mass. despite recent storms

The Buck Moon gets its nickname from the time of year when male deer, or bucks, experience rapid antler growth. Although antlers are an extension of a deer’s skull, bucks shed them each winter and begin growing new ones each spring, making this full moon a significant marker in the natural world.

The Buck Moon will appear from Friday evening to Monday morning, reaching its peak at 6:17 a.m. on Sunday, according to NASA.

In addition to its striking brightness, the Buck Moon holds cultural significance in various traditions. Native American tribes named it for the buck’s antler growth, while others may refer to it as the Thunder Moon, acknowledging the frequent thunderstorms that occur during this time of year.
