CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) -This summer auto experts are reminding drivers to protect their vehicles.

Massachusetts is now ranked among the top five states in the U.S. where people are getting their vehicles stolen.

That’s according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, and while many think old cars could be vulnerable, the owner of Spartan Auto Care in West Springfield says modern ones like Hyundais and Kias are the top prospects because of a social media trend. “Keep the keys, lock the car don’t keep your car sitting for months at a time,” says Nick Katsoulis.

16%, that’s how much car thefts have gone up between 2022 and last year. Some drivers say they are keeping an extra close eye on their cars this summer despite where they live.

“I’m walking around the neighborhoods you know I’m dishing out solar you know I always see these things holding the wheel and the door I’m not sure what that is but people need to be more careful you know cars are being stolen all the time” says Jack Cordoba.

“I lock my car I put crook locks on it and I look out the window every five minutes,” says Nicholas Palumbo.
