What are the pros and cons of legalizing an online lottery?

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – While an online lottery is expected to raise millions for early childhood education and care, there are some drawbacks, most of which are felt by those recovering from gambling addictions.

Governor Maura Healey signed the fiscal year 2025 state budget Monday, and among several items, this budget allows the Massachusetts lottery to sell its products online. With the authorization of a Massachusetts “iLottery”, people will have the opportunity to participate right at their fingertips.

Revenue generated from online lottery sales will support grants for early childhood education, which according to State Treasurer Goldberg, is desperately needed across the state, but not without pushback from retail trade groups and those battling gambling addiction.

“I feel that state’s dollars could be allocated for something a lot better than something that can become so destructive and have a lot of negative, not only financial aspects, but mental health aspects especially,” said 22News viewer Antonio Basile of Chicopee.

As for retailers, the owner of Buckeye Brothers Smoke Shop, David Glantz, feels the digital age will take away in-person interactions. He also echoed Basile’s concerns.

“What are the safeguards in place for problem gamblers?” asked Glantz. “Is there a shut off point, you know, when you can only bet so much online, or how much can you, how far can they go, how much can you bet, you know there’s a lot of ifs.”

Despite these unknowns, lottery officials stated their excitement to implement an online lottery, saying they are prepared to offer players a modern lottery experience.

Massachusetts Lottery officials anticipate launching its online platform in approximately 16 months and requires customers to be at least 21 years old to participate.
