CHILLICOTHE— From Adena Mansion to Zane's Trace Ross County is filled with a rich history. When looking at the ABCs of Ross County the Z stands for Zane's Trace.

Zane's Trace is a historic road that runs through Ross County. What started as Native American trails eventually became over 230 miles of road after settlers continued to use the path.

The road construction was directed by Col. Ebenezer Zane, a pioneer and soldier. The road became one of the only major roadways in Ohio until the War of 1812 and it encouraged settlement in the Northwest Territory. It did just that as at the time Chillicothe was the only settlement existing along the roadway but as time went on many still existing towns took form. Part of the original Zane's trace can still be driven today.
