H.S. Football Roundup: Unioto leaves no doubt and overwhelms Paint Valley to clinch SVC title

    By Tom Wilson, Chillicothe Gazette,

The Unioto Shermans left no doubt as they overwhelmed the visiting Paint Valley Bearcats 43-0 on Friday to clinch at least a share of the Scioto Valley Conference title.

Unioto improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the league and clinched the outright title and the Golf Football with a win next week over Southeastern. Paint Valley slipped to 7-2 and 4-2.

Cody Braden got the scoring started by punching it in from two yards out as the Shermans went up 7-0 at the 9:47 mark of the first quarter.

An interception by Caden Cutright set up the Shermans' next score — another rushing touchdown by Braden.

Braden would find the end zone again in the first half to make it 21-0.

Isaac Coy hit Levi Beam on a 46-yard pass to set up the next Shermans' touchdown. Coy ran it after spinning out of a tackle. A penalty on the PAT, had the Shermans going for a successful 2-point conversion that made it 29-0.

Javon Smith recovered a fumble that set up Blake Hoops catching a three-yard touchdown pass from Coy as the Shermans took a 35-0 lead into halftime.

With the running clock throughout the second half, the Shermans' defense shut down Paint Valley.

Unioto gave Paint Valley a heavy dose of Yusef Wilson, a sophomore, on their final scoring drive which ended with Wilson in the end zone.

"Going into the season, I had a couple of carries," Wilson said. "And then I had a rough game at Huntington and I had one carry since then. This is my first game having over two carries. I feel like I got the momentum and kept going.

The Shermans, which finished with 302 total yards, forced six turnovers and held Paint Valley to 160 total yards.  The Bearcats were playing without injured running back Braylon Robertson.

The win sets up the possibility of Unioto going undefeated in the conference and earning the Gold Ball next week.

"We just wanted it," Marcel James, a senior defensive lineman, said after the game. "We kept going and going. And once we're going we don't give up."

Unioto quarterback Isaac Coy completed 8 of 15 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown. Cody Braden added 63 yards rushing on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns, and Yusef Wilson chipped in 69 yards rushing and a touchdown on 12 carries.
