A new area of interest emerges in the tropics
BALTIMORE — After multiple quiet weeks, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area in the Atlantic just to the north of South America. This tropical wave currently, isn't so impressive. The NHC gave the area a 0% chance of development over the next 48 hours. Then conditions become more favorable, the 7-day outlook has the same wave with a 40% chance of development. We shall see if it gets a name. The next letter is "D" in our 2024 Atlantic Season alphabet named Debby. As long as they steer clear of Maryland all is good!
Retired WJZ sports director Mark Viviano to throw ceremonial first pitch at Tuesday's Orioles game
BALTIMORE - Retired WJZ sports director Mark Viviano will step to the mound and deliver the ceremonial first pitch before Tuesday's Baltimore Orioles game at Camden Yards.The first-place Orioles play the Toronto Blue Jays at 6:30 p.m.Viviano's last day at WJZ was on July 18 after spending 22 years at the station.He earned his place as an esteemed sports journalist in the Baltimore community, covering stories on the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens, along with collegiate and high school sports teams."I say to the Orioles, to the Ravens, to any athlete, any coach, anyone who gave me as much as a minute of your time, I never took your time for granted, and I am so grateful that you allowed me to share your story." Viviano says he plans to remain in Baltimore and raise his family with his wife. On his final day at WJZ, he was honored with a video tribute from some of Baltimore's most iconic sports figures.

Annapolis woman reunited with cat 10 years later
10 years ago, a nurse treated an elderly patient at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. At the time, the patient and her partner had to surrender their 7-year-old cat named Papa Bear. After being re-admitted, the nurse who adopted the cat recognized the patient and brought the cat back in to reconnect with his former owner!
$8 Million Yacht Capsizes Near Annapolis
On Saturday, a 122-foot yacht capsized on Maryland's Rhode River, forcing the crew to abandon ship. At about 1230 hours on Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call from the 2010-built yacht Lovebug. The vessel was located near the mouth of the Rhode River, a small tidal estuary about eight nautical miles south of Annapolis. It was listing dangerously to starboard. The Coast Guard and Maryland Natural Resources Police dispatched response assets, and the yacht's crew safely abandoned ship with the help of a good Samaritan vessel. By late afternoon, the yacht was listing about 70 degrees and appeared to be resting on the bottom on its starboard side.
