Three Chilton teams fall one win short of Sweet 16 rounds

Three Chilton County high school basketball teams came up one win shy of making their respective Sweet 16 rounds from Feb. 9-10. All of the teams lost on the road in the sub-regional round.

Maplesville High School’s varsity boy’s basketball team lost by a bucket to R.C. Hatch High School, 50-48, on Feb. 10. The Red Devils led down the stretch, but a late run by R.C. Hatch was closed out by hitting a floater with three seconds left.

“I was very impressed with the boys this season … We hung our hats on defense, and the boys were very young but they bought in, did everything I said and bought into the process,” Maplesville head coach Undra Rush said. “We got some big area wins and they started believing even more … (Improvement) happened faster than I thought it would in just two seasons, and they impressed me, the school and the community. The guys had a good season, and we have accomplished a lot in just two seasons.”

Nehemiah McCary led Maplesville in scoring with 24 points and added 13 rebounds, followed by Jakobe Nix with 11 points. Johnathon Wilson had six points, and Aidan Abbott had four points and seven rebounds.

Isabella High School’s varsity girl’s basketball team fell 72-30 to Cold Springs High School on the road on Feb. 9 in the sub-regional of the AHSAA Class 2A state basketball playoffs. The Mustangs were led by Amelia Fjeldstad with 15 points.

“This was a special group of girls that came to work every day, never any problems,” Isabella head coach Jared Day said. “I feel bad for (the seniors), because they meant a lot to this program and what we have done.”

Chilton County High School’s varsity boy’ basketball team dropped its sub-regional game at McAdory High School 87-46 on Feb. 10. Cayden Meank and Bradin Yates each had 11 points to lead the scorers for the Tigers. Meank was 3-for-3 from 3-point range, and Yates added nine rebounds to his totals.

D.J. Caffey had 10 points, and five rebounds and assists each, Marco Simon had eight points and Justin Godwin contributed nine rebounds and six assists.
