Jesus opens the most famous oratory in history with eight blessings. These sayings are collectively known as the Beatitudes.

Using the language borrowed from the first psalm and a messianic prophecy from Isaiah, Jesus describes what kingdom people are like. Jesus, the teacher, is ready to change these people’s lives forever.

He teaches with complete purity in heart toward transformation, not information. We, too, should read these blessings to be transformed.

When approaching these sayings, don’t read them as commands or achievements. Receive the kingdom of heaven. As you receive, you will recognize the blessed life.

I want to recommend some ways to read them. First, read the Beatitudes for the present moment. These are not blessings for the afterlife. They are blessings now.

Second, they build upon one another. Each blessed person represents a progression, moving from those who have been poor in spirit but found God to those who are persecuted because of their faith.

Third, read them backward. The first one states, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they shall inherit the kingdom of heaven.” So, we can read it because of the kingdom of heaven, the poor in spirit are blessed. And it’s true.

The last recommendation is to read the word even into the text. Blessed are the merciful, for even they will receive mercy. Let’s dive into those blessed by Jesus’ kingdom.

The word “beatitudes” means blessing. In the culture Jesus is stating this, the word blessing could mean inner peace, health or happiness. It refers to the sense of God’s approval or favor in their life, which leads to overwhelming joy.

So, what a joy to have a savior who wants to bless us. Even if you are poor in spirit, mourning or meek, the kingdom of God is a blessing to you.

The poor in spirit are those who state their need for help. “I need help” is the phrase that unlocks heaven in your life. Jesus modeled this for us by relying on His relationship with His Father but also needing the disciples.

Remember Him asking, “Can’t you pray one hour with me?” Jesus was in need and didn’t mind showing it. Today, Jesus is the king of heaven, and offered to all who are poor in spirit.

Secondly, Jesus offers blessings to those who mourn or grieve — those who are broken about their sin or the eternal state of those they love. It’s heartbreaking to see how much heartache is out there; yet comfort and strength are offered through the kingdom. If you are sensitive to the pains of this life, then take heart for Jesus’ blessing kingdom is for you.

If you are shy, unassertive or carrying a guilty spirit, there is a kingdom for you. In fact, you can receive leadership here on earth. Dominion has been offered to the meek which means power under control. It isn’t weakness or lowliness.

Meekness in Greek refers to a horse that has been broken. A powerful animal that can be controlled for specific use is vastly useful. If you feel like no one ever knows what you are capable of, there is a kingdom for you. Be blessed by the knowledge that you can inherit this earth.

We will pick up the last five next week. Be blessed.
