What if your thoughts aren’t facts?
A few years ago, I was wallowing in the chaos of my own brain, and I didn’t even know it. I lived in a state of almost constant overwhelm, but I was so used to it that I had begun to believe it was normal. Didn’t everyone stress about every detail of every moment? Wasn’t it normal to feel an underlying tension for no particular reason throughout the day? Weren’t all the other humans drowning in every request that was made of them? ...

Smith column: What to do when entrusted with sex abuse survivor's truth
I recently spoke with a local trauma therapist experienced in treating child sexual abuse. We sat comfortably on her back porch surrounded by tall trees and singing birds as she cautioned how our culture needs to better understand and support child sexual abuse survivors. “There is a mistaken belief that children are adaptable and can simply move on from sexual abuse, perpetuating the myth that it doesn’t cause a deep...
God will keep his promise to you
I promise! Do you always keep your promise? With the business of life and having four children, many times I make promises and forget to keep them. It’s not that I don’t wanna keep my promises, nor is it a regret of promising the thing in the first place and hoping my wife or children will forget. It is simply I cannot remember all of the things that I have...
Hoggard column: When God calls, we must, like Isaiah, listen and obey
The prophet Isaiah’s calling story — a stark contrast to the bleak future he prophesied — is revealed in the sixth chapter of his writings. In the first five chapters, he paints a grim picture of Israel’s future, foretelling widespread devastation in the land of Canaan. As a prophet in Jerusalem, he even predicts the destruction of his own home. This must have raised questions among his neighbors, prompting him to explain his calling. ...

Hartman column: Agape love continues when all else is useless, needless
In I Corinthians 13, starting at verse 8, Paul states that agape love never ends (or fails, depending on your Bible translation). It is significant because there will be a time when we no longer require faith because we will be in God’s presence. We will no longer need hope because we will dwell in the reality of His glory. Yet, love will remain. See, when all else has been deemed useless or needless. The greatest of these — agape love — will remain. In...

At Edenton’s Waterfront Park, the Major League Fishing tournament was thumping to a climax as a country western band belted out another tune with a baseline folks could feel in the parking lot. Fans in lawn chairs sat next to a Bass Pro Shops NASCAR racer listening to the music while a couple of men listened to the sales pitch at the Air Force recruiting tent. Food vendors were selling...
