Child Slayer Susan Smith Up For Parole In November, Ex-Husband Says Smith Wants His Help To Get Out

David Smith, the former spouse of Susan Smith, who killed their two boys in 1994 and is now serving life in prison, shares his thoughts on what he'd tell the convicted murderer if they came face-to-face.

In a special talk with Court TV on Friday, Sept. 13, David Smith reveals what he'd say to Susan, who could get parole in November, 30 years after the killings in South Carolina.

"I'd just tell her that you don't know how much harm you've caused so many people," David tells Court TV host Julie Grant. "I'd tell her I'll do all I can to ensure you stay in jail."

David reveals he hasn't spoken with Susan in many years. Court TV reports that Susan sent her ex-husband a letter, begging him to help her get out of prison. David said he would be at her parole hearing to do everything he could to keep her behind bars.

On Oct. 25, 1994, Smith, then 23, told cops that a Black man had stolen her car with her two young sons inside. For nine days, she cried on TV, asking for their safe return. But it was all fake.

As her story fell apart, PEOPLE reports that Smith admitted there was no carjacker and that she'd let her car roll into a lake with Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months, still in their car seats. Officials said she killed them because she was secretly seeing a man who didn't want kids.

David has talked about the killings before, telling PEOPLE in 2010 that he's never fully healed from the pain. "There's always this nagging heartache," David said. "It's there every day, even if I'm not always aware of it."

Susan was found guilty of two counts of murder and is serving life in Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, S.C.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says Susan can request parole on November 4, 2024.

In 2015, Susan defended herself in a letter to The State, a South Carolina newspaper.

"Mr. Cahill, I'm not the monster people think I am," she wrote to reporter Harrison Cahill. "I'm far from it."

she's not going anywhere. if a parole board gives her parole, hearing everything we hear about her and all her men and how she KNOWS she's getting out, then that board needs to be fired.
