The Young and the Restless Star Joshua Morrow Settles The Debate On Nick's True Love

The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) is knee-deep in a storyline to save his ex-wife, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case), from her inner demons. Soap Opera Digest sat down with Morrow to get insight into the storyline and settle the social media debate on Nick's true love.

While it's uncommon for men to be deeply involved in their ex-wives' lives, Nick Newman finds it business as usual on the Young and Restless set. The character is embroiled in storylines with his ex-wives, Sharon and Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford).

    Steady Support

Joshua Morrow, Nick's portrayer since 1994, believes his character thrives on this dynamic. Particularly now, as Sharon grapples with a prolonged mental health crisis after stopping her bipolar medication.

"Nick is Sharon's anchor," the actor suggests. "In fact, he's that for everyone on the show — he aspires to be the go-to person when times are tough. He embraces this role. He's driven to help others and be their rock, which he often is."

The Young and the Restless star doesn't see Nick and Sharon's deep connection as a sign of rekindling romance.

He maintains, "There's no romantic spark between them, but they are incredibly close. They've evolved into great friends. Where this leads is anyone's guess. You can let your imagination run wild. However, Nick understands his importance to Sharon, and she truly depends on him during difficult times. Their rich history only strengthens Sharon, and Nick knows this."

Nick's "let me help you" attitude extends to Phyllis, too, despite her challenging nature.

Morrow asserts, "I firmly believe that, at his core, he'll never abandon those who matter most to him. This includes both Sharon and Phyllis. Regardless of their life situations, Nick will always stand by them, despite their past conflicts, especially during tough times. Sharon's clearly struggling now, but he'll never turn his back on either of them or his family. As I mentioned, he enjoys being everyone's pillar. That's his nature, and I admire that about him. He takes his father's lessons seriously: 'Family above all.' Nick's approach differs greatly from Victor's, but he'll remain everyone's reliable support for life."

    Fiery Passion

How does Morrow view Nick and Phyllis's current relationship?

"They share a unique bond," The Young and the Restless star explains. "I think they understand each other better than anyone else in Genoa City. She's a whirlwind of emotions, and they have this playful back-and-forth."

The actor believes there's still a spark between them. "There's always this electric attraction, I think. What's funny is how I like to play Nick when he sees Phyllis, especially with Summer. He knows he's about to step into a tornado. He's thinking, 'Oh boy, I better buckle up because we're in for a wild ride!'"

    Your Girl Forever

Morrow feels lucky to have worked closely with Sharon Case (Sharon) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) for so long. Nick and Sharon's love story began in 1994, while Nick and Phyllis's romance started in 2005.

He especially enjoys it when all three characters interact. "That triangle is my favorite storyline ever," he admits. "Getting to play it year after year with these two incredibly talented women is just amazing. The writers do a great job; you can count on Nick having fun moments with both women every week. The audience loves it, too."

Morrow notes an interesting dynamic among the three. "Nick often asks Phyllis for advice about Sharon. I think it's because they're good friends. But he rarely, if ever, asks Sharon for advice about Phyllis! Nick and Sharon were young true loves, so their relationship differs greatly from Nick and Phyllis'. I find it interesting that Nick's talks with Phyllis are more like, 'I need help. We're friends.' With Sharon, there's a different emotional connection, and I think he doesn't want to hurt her by asking for advice about Phyllis."

Morrow concludes, "Nick's deep love for Sharon and Phyllis is the heart of the issue. He can't fully move on from either, which complicates each relationship. Nick's inability to commit solely to one woman keeps things interesting. I love that complexity, and so do Sharon and Michelle. It's a constant source of drama, which is exactly what we want in soaps! We crave messiness, problems, and layers to explore. This triangle has endured for good reason and will continue to captivate audiences. The ongoing tension and unresolved feelings create the perfect storm for compelling storytelling. It's the kind of emotional tangle that keeps viewers tuning in, eager to see how these complex relationships will evolve and intersect next."

There you have it The Young and the Restless fans, Joshua Morrow says Phyllis and Sharon are both Nick's true love, both for different reasons. He needs them both in his life.
