    Sports briefs: Lady Falcons basketball plans golf scramble

    CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer High School Lady Falcons basketball team will host a golf scramble to raise funds for the 2024-25 season on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Bays Mountain Golf Course.

    The fee is $200 per team for the four-person scramble. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. A mulligan package is available. There’ll also be a closest to pin contest on hole No. 6 and longest drive contest on hole No. 5.

    Hole sponsorships are $100 each. A $5 hot dog lunch will be available for purchase.

    Velocity Fastpitch adds 8U tryout

    CHURCH HILL — Velocity Fastpitch 8U will hold a second tryout on Saturday, July 27, from 2-4 p.m. at McPheeter’s Bend.

    The field is located at 1115 Goshen Valley Road in Church Hill.

    Chiefs’ mattress fundraiser is July 27

    ROGERSVILLE — The Cherokee football team will host a mattress fundraiser on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the school gym. Anyone in the market for a new mattress, pillows, sheets or other sleeping items is invited to stop in. Learn more about the mattress fundraiser at https://vimeo.com/637591323.

    The football team is also selling the annual Mobuck discount cards. Anyone interested in purchasing one can reach out to any football player.

    VHS Touchdown Club hosting cleanup days

    CHURCH HILL — The Volunteer High School Touchdown Club will host a pair of cleanup days to help get the football stadium ready for the 2024 season.

    Cleanup days are planned for July 27 and Aug. 3 from 8 a.m. until noon each day. Community service hours are available for students.

    The Falcons will host preseason scrimmages on Aug. 6 against West Greene, Aug. 9 against Daniel Boone and Aug. 13 against Hampton. All three events begin at 6 p.m.

    Velocity Fastpitch schedules 12U tryouts

    Velocity Fastpitch will host 12U softball tryouts for birth years 2011 and 2012 on July 28 from 6-8 p.m. All positions will be considered. Contact Paul Robinson at 423-534-4342 or email velocityxii@yahoo.com for the details.

    ‘Ride for Hope’ coming Aug. 10

    ROGERSVILLE — Signups are underway for the “Ride for Hope” bicycle event. The former “Ride Like Hale” event is back Aug. 10 with a new name, but it still offers options for 21-mile, 36-mile or 62-mile rides through scenic Hawkins County. The rides, sponsored by Just Ride Bikes & Fitness, will leave Hawkins Elementary School in Rogersville starting at 8 a.m.

    The entry fee is $35 and includes rest stops and lunch. Learn more and register online at rideforcamphope.com. Proceeds benefit Camp Hope of East Tennessee, a 100% free summer camp located in Hawkins County. Sponsorships are also available.

    West wins Appy League All-Star game

    JOHNSON CITY — The West beat the East 4-1 in the Appalachian League All-Star Game on Tuesday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

    Brodie Johnston claimed MVP honors after going 2-for-4 with a solo homer to get the West on the board early. Japanese phenom Rintaro Sasaki hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth.

    The rosters featured 44 of the league’s top players from the East and West divisions as nominated and voted on by the league’s managers. The Otterbots and the Greeneville Flyboys led all Appy League teams with seven all-star selections each, followed closely by the Kingsport Axmen with six and the Tri-State Coal Cats with five. Kingsport’s Mason Swinney homered for the West in the eighth inning.
