As a third-year medical student at SUNY Upstate Medical University, I witness firsthand the profound impact that representation has on patient care. When I enter a clinic or hospital room, and patients see someone who looks like them, I can feel an immediate shift in their demeanor. “Doctora, le puedo decir lo que tengo?” they ask (”Doctor, can I tell you what I have?”), relieved to communicate in their native language. This connection is vital, yet it highlights a critical issue in our healthcare system: the persistent lack of Latinx physicians, especially in Upstate New York.
