Opera reveals if McCartney will attend 'Liverpool Oratorio' opening
Cincinnati’s orchestrated campaign to lure music legend Paul McCartney to Music Hall might have fallen on deaf ears. <\p> Courier arts contributor Janelle Gelfand reported on her blog this week that Sir Paul will not be attending the July 18 opening night performance of “Liverpool Oratorio,” the world premiere of the work's staged version presented by Cincinnati Opera. But the former Beatle will send a personal message to audiences, opera officials said July 15.<\p>

Suburban brunch spot closes first location, prepares to open in NKY
A breakfast and brunch restaurant in the northern Cincinnati suburbs has abruptly closed its first location shortly after announcing the opening of its second in Northern Kentucky.<\p> French Toast Heaven first opened in West Chester Township last summer, at 4877 Smith Road in the Beckett Towne Centre, which was previously owned by Blue Chip Resources LTD, according to the Butler County Auditor’s website. <\p>
Cincinnati construction firm wins $44M defense contract
One of Cincinnati’s largest contracting firms has won a nearly $44 million award from the U.S. Department of Defense for work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the largest single-site employer in Ohio.<\p> Messer Construction on June 20 was awarded the contract to build an Army Reserve center, an area maintenance support activity shop and a vehicle maintenance shop.<\p>
Two local foundations pledge funds for NKY entrepreneurial hub
Two long-standing Greater Cincinnati foundations have pledged separate six-figure gifts to fund a new project that will revitalize a now-vacant storefront in downtown Covington.<\p> SparkHaus, an entrepreneurship hub slated to take over the former Sims Furniture building at 727 Madison Ave., received a $500,000 pledge from the Carol Ann & Ralph V. Haile Jr. Foundation. The Drees Homes Foundation also contributed $250,000.<\p>
CVG adds new nonstop flight
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will get a new nonstop flight to Melbourne, Fla., this fall.<\p> The Allegiant Air flight, which begins Friday, Nov. 15, will give travelers access to Cocoa Beach on Florida's east coastline. <\p>
One of Cincinnati's largest architecture firms adds to leadership team
One of the largest architecture firms in Greater Cincinnati has named a new principal and associate principal to its leadership team.<\p> Downtown-based SHP promoted Jacob Faiola to the role of principal, according to a July 12 news release.<\p>

The city of Cincinnati has ended a program where people who own electric vehicles can park for free at metered spots throughout the city and in certain city-owned garages.<\p> The program, which was started in 2008 with the goal of boosting the number of people who owned such cars, ended July 1. The city quit issuing new permits April 15. The city created the program before the federal government began providing financial incentives for EVs. <\p>
West Chester’s zombie hotel gets new life, targeted opening date
Creative financing will allow a unique West Chester hotel project, stalled during the Covid-19 pandemic, to restart with the goal of opening by the end of 2024.<\p> The 136-room Hyatt House-branded hotel and attached 10,800-square-foot rehab facility has sat unfinished at the prominent southwest corner of Cox Road and Liberty Way since construction halted in 2021. <\p>
Teachers could strike at one of region’s largest school districts
More than 600 Mason educators are without a contract as negotiations between their union and the school board have stalled, according to a report from Business Courier news partner WKRC-TV.<\p> The contract expired June 30, and school starts Aug. 15. Some parents are now worried about the impact this could have on students if an agreement isn't reached.<\p>
CMBS apartment distress surges as operators struggle to refinance
Distress in the multifamily sector of commercial real estate is mounting as debt issued during a time of ultra-low interest rates is coming due.<\p> Among commercial mortgage-backed securities loans for single-borrower, large multifamily properties, the rate of distress is up 185% in the past six months, according to an analysis by Wayne, Pennsylvania-based commercial real estate data-analytics platform CRED iQ.<\p>
Former GE Aviation CEO sells Indian Hill estate for $5.8M: PHOTOS
An Indian Hill estate most recently owned by the former CEO of GE Aviation just sold for the highest sale price of the year.<\p> The home at 8500 Fox Cub Lane was sold by John Slattery to an undisclosed buyer for $5.8 million. Julie Back, executive sales vice president with Sibcy Cline Realtors, was the listing agent for the home.<\p>
Public firm acquires NKY, East Side communities as part of $143M deal
Two local senior living facilities were recently purchased by a Chicago-based real estate trust.<\p> Ventas, which specializes in owning senior living centers, purchased Magnolia Springs Loveland and Magnolia Springs Florence for $13.7 million and $15.4 million, respectively. Ventas (NYSE: VTR) owns about 1,400 properties throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and is the U.S’s second-largest owner of senior housing, according to a 2022 report released by the American Seniors Housing Association.<\p>
