The City of Cincinnati will unveil a new installation honoring the Black Lives Matter movement outside City Hall on Aug. 28.

The “BLM! Bronze Marker” will be installed to the right of City Hall’s entrance, according to a new release about the project. The marker will serve as “a permanent tribute to the ongoing struggle for civil rights and the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change” in Cincinnati. [content-1] The unveiling event will bring together artists, community leaders and residents to commemorate the movement. City officials like Mayor Aftab Pureval, Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio) and City Manager Sheryl Long, as well as community advocates from Black Art Speaks, ArtsWave and Cintas Corporation, will deliver remarks at the event. The local artists who created the bronze marker will also speak about their work at the event.

Cincinnati has been investing in art projects supporting the BLM movement since 2020. City Council voted unanimously to create a BLM mural on Plum Street outside City Hall in 2020. The mural received a new paint job in 2022.
Black Art Speaks, a Cincinnati artist collective also supporting the new bronze marker, also began the installation of 16 giant-letter sculptures across Cincinnati that will spell out “Black Lives Matter!” this year. The letter R has already been erected in Roselawn.
The unveiling ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on Aug. 28 outside City Hall.
