George 'Bud' Acus, longtime Sycamore High School football coach and educator, has died

A longtime Sycamore Community Schools educator and football coach has died.

George "Bud" Acus is remembered for leading some of the most successful Sycamore High School football teams while coaching the team in the 1950s and '60s, according to the district. He also taught for decades at the high school and served as principal of Blue Ash Elementary and Sycamore Junior High.

Acus died on Wednesday. He was 95.

Under his tutelage between 1953 and 1967, the Sycamore football team earned a combined record of 93-38-10. That made Acus the second-winningest coach in Sycamore football history.

In 1961, his brother Jack Acus, who died in 2011 , joined his coaching staff at Sycamore as an assistant. The brothers coached together for about eight years, guiding the 1964 team to a conference championship.

Decades later in 2006, Sycamore High School later went on to dedicate its football field in Bud Acus' name .

Steve Imhoff played as quarterback for Sycamore during Acus' last season in 1967. He remembers Acus as not only an impactful coach and gym teacher, but later as a colleague in the district when Imhoff later went on to become a teacher himself. The two also served on the Sycamore Athletic Hall of Fame committee together.

"He was tough as nails in football, but you knew there was a big heart behind it," Imhoff said of Acus.

The Sycamore athletic department is honoring memory at the first home football game of the season on Aug. 30. The game starts at 7 p.m. at the Bud Acus Alumni Field, located next to the high school at 7400 Cornell Road in Montgomery. All former players of Acus will receive free admission.
