High school football scores: Follow for live updates from Cincinnati's Week 1 games

15 hours agoHigh school was welcomed back on Thursday with Elder's win at Withrow , but that single game was just an appetizer to a full menu of over 60 more games in the area on Friday and Saturday for Week 1 of the season.
We've got everything covered here for Week 1 from up-to-date scores, video updates from top games and more news for your Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky schools.
In Week 1 of the high school football season, the rest of the Greater Catholic League-South hits the road on trips to the Greater Miami Conference , including the rekindled Moeller-Princeton rivalry . In Indiana, East Central and Lawrenceburg meet in their yearly battle while Covington Catholic and Ryle battle in Northern Kentucky.
The road to championships starts in Week 1 and the slate of games is surely setting the way for another exciting high school football season.

Highlands 17, Lexington Catholic 7
Highlands outgained Lexington Catholic 322-170 on the night, but didn’t run away on the scoreboard in a tight 17-7 victory. The Bluebirds led just 8-7 at the half, but stopped Lexington Catholic from finding the endzone again. Isaac Niemann and Adam Surrey scored the only Highlands touchdowns of the game, both on the ground. Senior lineman Tom Ferring had three sacks for the Bluebirds.

Campbell County’s offense played a near-perfect game against Scott. Quarterback Lucas Anthrop completed eight-of-nine passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns, adding 189 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns as well. Six other Camels scored a touchdown. Aiden Dowds had three tackles for loss and a sack for the Camels and Owen Underwood chipped in a sack. Scott’s Trey Cook completed 25-of-40 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns.

West Clermont 20, Mount Healthy 18
Mount Healthy opened the year in style with an 80-yard kickoff return from Larry Fannon, but West Clermont recovered nicely to hold off the Owls in a 20-18 victory. Mount Healthy took a 12-10 lead when Fannon caught a 41-yard pass from Jahmeir Spain with 1:20 left in the first half, but the Wolves kicked a field goal as the half expired for a 13-12 advantage. Bo Rickman scored in the third quarter with the game-sealing score, holding the lead as Mount Healthy scored again, but failed the point after for the third time.

Anderson came into the season with state tournament expectations and a 51-6 victory in Week 1 helped its case. The Raptors scored early, often and with two-point conversions aplenty. The Raptors went for two on their first four touchdowns, converting three times. Anderson quarterback Justice Burnam was 12-14 for 296 yards and five touchdowns. Owen Scalf completed both of his passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Six different Raptors caught touchdown passes with Trace Jallick leading with three receptions for 116 yards.

Talawanda scored first on Friday night but then couldn’t get anything going the rest of the way. Taylor scored three unanswered touchdowns to take the win. The victors rode the offensive production of Easton Schrimpf, who ran 13 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Charlie Kantz who threw for 141 yards and two scores. Aaron McFarland had 94 yards and a touchdown for Taylor. On defense, Taylor had eight sacks, including 3.5 from Brody Lehman and two from Grant Ferguson. Talawanda quarterback Cale Leitch completed 12-of-17 passes for 138 yards, but the Brave rushed for 0.6 yards per carry.

Harrison’s offense fired on all cylinders in its win over Loveland. Cole Koops rushed 20 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns and Dickie Engel passed for 128 yards and two scores. Engel and Preston Flick also added rushing touchdowns. Flick and Josh Addelsperger caught touchdown passes, and Addelsperger went for 78 yards on three catches.

Indian Hill 30, Roger Bacon 17
Bubba Smart connected with Victor Johnson for a seven-yard touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter against Indian Hill. The visiting Braves responded with a three-yard run from Devlan Daniel, but a missed extra point kept Roger Bacon in the game with six minutes left. The Spartans failed to score again and another Daniel touchdown run with an extra point gave Indian Hill a 30-17 lead with less than 90 seconds remaining, sealing the win. Daniel rushed 25 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns and completed two passes for 119 yards and another score. Jake Freshwater caught three passes for Indian Hill for 142 yards. While Roger Bacon was held to just 17 rushing yards, Smart was 18-37 passing for 267 yards and two touchdowns.

Lakota East quarterback Jamison Kitna, who committed to play football at the University of Alabama at Birmingham earlier in the week, couldn’t lead the Thunderhawks past Centerville despite a strong statistical day. Kitna threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns to one interception. Zion Neal was his top receiver, catching six passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Centerville’s quarterback Shane Cole threw for three scores on 12 pass attempts. Lakota East outgained Centerville, but the Elks won the turnover battle 2-1.

Oak Hills 34, Turpin 31
Oak Hills senior kicker Jaxson Dorsel nailed a 34-yard field goal, his second field goal of the game, as time expired to give Oak Hills the walk-off win over Turpin. The Oak Hills rushing attack was headed by Max Rhodes, who averaged 6.8 yards on 12 carries. Max Supe caught two passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score. Kane Powell had five tackles and an interception return touchdown. Turpin couldn’t do much on the ground but Devan Nigam threw for nearly 350 yards and two touchdowns with eight different Turpin receivers grabbing a catch. Nigam also punted once for an impressive 53 yards. Brandon Riley was a standout on defense for Turpin with two sacks.

Another season underway for Milford is another season the Eagles offense comes out firing. A 369-yard offensive performance from Milford included a 17-22 passing night from quarterback Luke Brand with 264 yards and four touchdowns. Caden Bailey caught 10 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. Edgewood’s Bryce Davidson drilled a 34-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter to cut Milford’s lead to 7-3, but Edgewood was held to just 73 yards the rest of the game.

Moeller quarterback Matt Ponatoski threw for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns, leading an explosive Crusader attack in one of Friday's biggest games.

Moeller piles on - Moeller 38, Princeton 14 - fourth quarter
East Central extends lead again - East Central 24, Lawrenceburg 3 - fourth quarter
Moeller nabs another score for commanding lead - Moeller 35, Princeton 14 - fourth quarter
Ponatarski, who broke Moeller’s single season passing yards record as a sophomore in 2023, has thrown for four touchdowns tonight. Princeton fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Moeller recovered at the 27-yard line.
St. X scores at 11th hour, but it’s not enough - Lakota West 17, St. Xavier 13 - final
Bomber quarterback Chase Herbstreit ran in for a one-yard touchdown with less than a minute left in the game, but Lakota West hung on for a big win.
Ryle grabs first win - Ryle 30 - Covington Catholic 14 - final
Ryle grabbed another two points on a safety to further extend its lead with about four minutes left in the game. The score would stay there until Ryle kneeled out the game.
Ponatoski throws for third touchdown but Princeton answers back - Moeller 28, Princeton 7 - third quarter
Lawrenceburg gets on the board in final frame - East Central 17, Lawrenceburg 3 - fourth quarter
Ryle takes stronghold - Ryle 28, Covington Catholic 14 - fourth quarter
Jacob Savage rushed up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown to give the Raiders the lead once again. The play was set up by a completion from quarterback Nate Verax to veteran receiver Landon Lorms on fourth-and-ten to move Ryle into the red zone and keep the Raider drive alive.
A few plays later, a snap went past Covington Catholic quarterback Dylan Gaiser and into the end zone, where a Raider fell on it for another score.
East Central extends lead again - East Central 17, Lawrenceburg 0 - third quarter
Bombers threaten, but Firebirds buckle down - Lakota West 17, St. Xavier 7 - fourth quarter
Covington Catholic ties it up - Covington Catholic 14, Ryle 14 - fourth quarter
Following the interception, Covington Catholic scored on a 24-yard catch by Donovan Bradshaw with barely any time left in the third quarter. Starting quarterback Kash Harney was off the field with what appeared to be cramps, so it was backup Dylan Gaiser who found Bradshaw.
Moeller scores again - Moeller 21, Princeton 7 - third quarter
Moeller scored on a one-yard touchdown run from Benjamin Rice. A 33-yard completion from Matt Ponatoski to Jovan Rice on third down set up the score.
Firebirds stuff Bombers to finish third - Lakota West 17, St. Xavier 7 - end third quarter
Sunset dazzles at half in Indiana - East Central 14, Lawrenceburg 0 - halftime
Momentum swings wildly in Northern Kentucky - Ryle 14, Covington Catholic 7 - third quarter
Covington Catholic fumbled the football with its back against the end zone but recovered it on the one-yard line. A few plays later, the Colonels fumbled again and this time the Raiders fell on the loose ball. On Ryle’s second offensive play of the ensuing drive, Covington Catholic’s Tate Kruer intercepted the ball and took it to the Ryle 40-yard line.

Firebirds extend lead - Lakota West 17, St. Xavier 7 - third quarter
Verax hits pay-dirt for Raiders - Ryle 14, Covington Catholic 7 - third quarter
Ryle junior Jacob Savage broke off a big run, taking the ball about 50 yards to the Colonel six yard-line. Two plays later, junior quarterback Nate Verax punched the ball in for the Ryle touchdown. After two penalties on the extra point try, Ryle nailed the PAT.
Ponatoski tosses touchdown as half winds down - Princeton 7, Moeller 14 - halftime
The score would stay the same as the game entered half.
Trojans strike first - East Central 7, Lawrenceburg 0 - second quarter
Colonels and Raiders head into half tied - Ryle 7, Covington Catholic 7 - halftime
Neither the Colonels nor the Raiders could score again before halftime, so the game went into the break with the score tied at seven.
Bombers and Firebirds enter halftime tied - Lakota West 14, St. Xavier 7 - halftime
Premier Indiana game remains scoreless - East Central 0, Lawrenceburg 0 - second quarter
Moeller evens score - Princeton 7, Moeller 7 - second quarter
Firebirds grab lead on Bombers - Lakota West 14 - St. Xavier 7, Halftime
Lakota West’s Sam Wiles completed a 22-yard pass to Trey Barnette with just more than four minutes left in the first half to give the Firebirds a touchdown lead. The score would stay there until the halftime break.
Lawrenceburg and East Central locked in defensive battle in first quarter
Teams answer back - Lakota West 7, St. Xavier 7 - second quarter; Ryle 7, Covington Catholic 7 - second quarter
Sam Wiles punched in a 4-yard touchdown run for Lakota West, tying the game between Lakota West and St. Xavier at 7. Nathan Verax found Landon Lorms in the back corner of the end zone, with Lorms making a spectacular catch to tie the game between Ryle and Covington Catholic at 7-7.
First blood drawn
St. Xavier took an early lead over Lakota West. The Bombers blocked a punt and Ja’Kobe Clapper returned the ball 26-yards to the Firebird 8-yard line. A play later, Chase Herbstreit ran the ball in for an 8-yard touchdown. A converted PAT made the score 7-0 Bombers.
Covington Catholic scored first on a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cash Harney. The PAT made it through the updates to make the score 7-0 Colonels.
Princeton took an early lead on Moeller with a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback De’Angelo Birch to make the score 7-0.
Defenses reign early in Week 1
Fifteen real-time minutes into Week 1, both St. X vs. Lakota West and Ryle vs. Covington Catholic are scoreless. The Bombers and the Firebirds traded punts to start, and a long Ryle gain was negated by an Illegal man downfield penalty.
Crosstown showdown packs Pat Mancuso Field
It was announced this afternoon that Pat Mancuso field’s capacity of 5,000 was sold out for maybe the biggest game on the schedule this evening between Moeller and Princeton.

Ohio High School Football Super 25 poll makes debut
The USA Today Network debuted its Ohio High School Football Super 25 poll this season, featuring voters from across Ohio selecting their top 25 teams, ranked regardless of division.
In the preseason Super 25 poll, Lakewood St. Edward took the top spot while Massillon Washington was just behind in second. Moeller leads the Cincinnati area with a top five ranking.

Yes, even Week 1 of high school football can bring out some big, historic rivalries .
The King of the Block is renewed for the regular season, pitting old rivals Moeller and Princeton after a 16-year hiatus. In the Miami Valley Conference, Cincinnati Country Day and Summit Country Day will meet in the Country Day Cup. The Nighthawks of Cincinnati Country Day were victorious in last year's meeting.
Also in Week 1 comes a battle of potential state tournament teams. The Battle for the Paddle will see Waynesville travel to Clinton-Massie a year removed from a 38-8 Clinton-Massie victory in the rivalry before both squads made postseason runs.

Who did Enquirer writers pick to win top Week 1 games?
As kickoff time nears for the first Friday of the 2024 high school football season, take time to check out the top games of the week and who Enquirer writers predicted to win each game. All five writers started the season 1-0 with Elder's win at Withrow.

Elder opens season with 28-6 win at Withrow on Thursday
Elder may be led by a sophomore quarterback in Kaden Estep, but it is the seniors that bleed purple , creating the winning culture that Elder has every season.
Withrow took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after a 92-yard touchdown run from Quinton Simmons, but responded with a touchdown in each quarter for a 28-6 victory. Senior Maddox Arnold rushed for two scores while senior Christopher Paff caught a pair of strikes from Estep for scores.
Next week, Elder has its first of seven home games, hosting West Catholic from Michigan. Withrow will look for its first win at Alter.
