Previous reporting: The Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to $535 million with a $265.6 million cash option for Friday, Aug. 23, as no ticket matching all six numbers drawn Tuesday night was sold.

There have been two big Mega Millions jackpots won in 2024 :
- On June 4, a $552 million ($260.2 million cash) jackpot was won by an anonymous player in Illinois with a ticket purchased online through the Illinois Lottery.
- On March 26, a $1.128 billion ($536.6 million cash) jackpot was won in New Jersey with a ticket purchased at ShopRite Liquor in Neptune Township, N.J.

How much are tickets and how do you play Mega Millions?
Tickets to Mega Millions cost $2 per play. There are nine ways to win a prize, from the jackpot to $2.
Pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball number from 1 to 25. Choose Easy Pick or Quick Pick to have the terminal randomly pick numbers for you. You win the jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in the drawing.
What is the Megaplier?
Most states offer the Megaplier feature, which does not apply to the jackpot, but increases other prizes from two, three, four and five times.
It costs an additional $1 per play.
Before each regular Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier is drawn. From a pool of 15 balls, five are marked with "2X," three with "4X" and one with "5X."
What is the Mega Millions cash option?
Jackpot winners have the choice of a cash option or an annual payout. The annual or annuity option provides an initial annual payment followed by 29 annual payments. Each payment is 5% larger than the previous one.
The Cash option is a one-time, lump-sum payment that is equal to all the cash in the Mega Millions jackpot prize pool. Prize claim parameters vary from state to state. Contact your Mega Millions state lottery for detailed information.

In Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, you can buy a Mega Millions ticket at gas stations, convenience stores and supermarkets until 10:45 p.m. on drawing night.

What were the winning numbers on Tuesday, Aug. 20?
No ticket matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 5, 20, 26, 49 and 51, plus the gold Mega Ball 24. The Megaplier was 4X.
On Tuesday, two tickets matched the five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize. One, sold in Delaware, is worth $4 million because it included the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase). The other second-tier winning ticket was sold in Arizona and wins the standard $1 million prize.
