What's open, closed in Greater Cincinnati on Labor Day? Banks, schools, stores and more

Labor Day , a national holiday that honors the American labor movement and modern workers, is Monday, Sept. 2.

Labor Day has been observed annually in the U.S. on the first Monday in September since President Grover Cleveland signed it into law in 1894. The holiday also signifies the end of summer and falls on the weekend of Riverfest and the Western & Southern WEBN fireworks , Cincinnati's annual end-of-season extravaganza.

Some of the businesses or services you usually use may be closed Monday because of the holiday. Here's a list of what will open and close on Labor Day this year.

What's open and closed for Labor Day on Sept. 2?

Banks: Although many banks observe federal holidays, they are not required to do so. Most banks, including Bank of America, Chase and PNC, will be closed. But be sure to check your local bank hours, just in case.

Federal Reserve banks will also be closed Monday.

Mail service: The United States Postal Service will observe Labor Day and not deliver regular mail or packages. UPS domestic ground, air and international delivery services will be closed. UPS's express critical care and forwarding (air and ocean) services will also be closed. Many UPS store locations and forwarding services (air and ocean) will be open.

Most FedEx delivery services, except for custom critical, will be closed Monday. FedEx Offices will be open for modified hours.

Trash service: If your regular trash collection day falls on a Monday , the city of Cincinnati will collect trash the following day. There will be no disruption to Rumpke services on Monday for Cincinnati residents. Still, residents can see whether the holiday will impact their regular pickup schedule by typing in their zip code on the Rumpke site.

Grocery stores: Many grocery stores, including Kroger, Target, Walmart, Jungle Jim's and Meijer, will be open. Aldi, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Sam's Club will operate on limited hours . Costco will be closed.

Schools: Cincinnati Public Schools and other school districts will be closed.

Local government: In Ohio, City of Cincinnati and Hamilton County offices and nonessential services will be closed, as will those in Butler County, Warren County and Clermont County. Boone County, Campbell County and Kenton County offices and nonessential services will also be closed in Kentucky.

Federal offices: Labor Day is a federal holiday. All nonessential government employees are off work, and most federal government offices are closed.

Stock markets: The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market will be closed.
