Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Aug. 30

In a vote that ended Aug. 30, Cincinnati.com readers selected the first 2024-2025 Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Aug. 25.

Here are this week's winners.

Ohio football team: West Clermont – The Wolves beat Southwest Ohio Conference-championship hopeful Mt. Healthy 20-18 Friday night to give first-year coach Ben Moorman his first win at West Clermont.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Highlands – The Bluebirds outgained Lexington Catholic 322-170 and didn’t allow a score in the second half in a 17-7 victory to start the season.

Boys fall team: Little Miami cross country – The Panthers had three racers place in the top 15 of the Lakota East Fall Classic, scoring 57 points to win as a team.

Girls fall team: Villa Madonna volleyball – The Vikings are 7-0 and have dropped just a pair of sets during that stretch.

Ohio boys cross-country runner: Alex Bruns, St. Xavier – He won the Buckeye Running Sunset Invitational with a new personal best of 15:14.4.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross-country runner: Will Sheets, Covington Catholic – The senior clocked the second-fastest 5K time of his career, winning the Moeller Primetime Invitational in 15:19.

Ohio girls cross-country runner: Heidi Harmeyer, Seton – The junior clocked a new personal best time of 18:41.3 to take third at Lakota East.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross-country runner: Lily Parke, Beechwood – She ran a massive personal best of 18:18.61 to win the Tiger Run in Louisville, beating the second-place runner by 13 seconds.

Boys golfer: Landon Harris, Moeller – The senior had top finishes in the St. Ignatius Invitational, the Walker Jones Classic and the Westerville Invitational before breaking a GCL and Moeller record for a round with a six-under-par 65 in a GCL Quad.

Girls golfer: Claire Renners, Ursuline Academy – On Aug. 22, Renners shot a four-over par 41 at O’Bannon Creek against Springboro.

Field hockey: Ella Jones, Mount Notre Dame ‒ Jones scored three goals and added three assists in MND’s first two games, both wins.

Ohio big-school football: Jaxson Dorsel, Oak Hills – He was 4-for-4 on PATs and 2-of-2 on field goals, including a 34-yard field goal at the end of the game to give the Highlanders a 34-31 win over Turpin.

Ohio small-school football: Luke Czarnecki, Williamsburg – He had eight tackles, 2.5 for loss, one sack and a forced fumble in the team’s 35-28 win over Purcell Marian.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football: Tommy Ferring, Highlands – The senior set the defensive tone for the season, recording three sacks in a win over Lexington Catholic.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Luke Smith, St. Xavier – He posted shutouts in the Bombers’ first three games of the season, two wins and a scoreless draw.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: Cole Robinson, Williamsburg – He scored three goals in an 11-0 win over Felicity-Franklin that was the most goals in a game in program history. Then he helped his team beat Georgetown 5-1, the first win over Georgetown in program history.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer: Brady Aubuchon, St. Henry – He was named the MVP of the All “A” Classic Ninth Region tournament after leading the Crusaders to the championship with his play in goal.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Madi Wheeldon, West Clermont – She was a bright spot for the Wolves in the preseason, moving to play forward and scoring a goal in scrimmage against Mount Notre Dame. She had two goals in a win against Princeton, the Wolves’ first win of the season.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Laney Murphy, Norwood – The senior had six goals and six assists in two Indians’ wins, including four goals and four assists to account for all the goals in an 8-0 win over West Carrollton.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer: Annie Zuerner, Calvary Christian – She had six goals and an assist combined in a win over Dayton and a draw with Carroll County.

Girls tennis: Meghan Bain, Seton – She picked up two Girls Greater Cincinnati League wins at first singles by beating Mount Notre Dame and Mercy McAuley.

Ohio big-school girls volleyball: Emma Tharp, Oak Hills – She led the Highlanders to a win over Milford with 16 kills, 11 digs, two aces and a block.

Ohio small-school girls volleyball: Rainey Weidman, Ursuline – The senior led the Lions with 32 digs and contributed 15 assists against Mason.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls volleyball: Kenadi Sieg, St. Henry – In her first varsity match, the freshman posted 22 digs, five assists and two aces in a win over Newport Central Catholic.

Water polo: Cole Dowden, Sycamore — Dowden, a goalie, led Sycamore with six assists and six steals, and added eight blocks to lead Sycamore to its fifth win of the season last week.
