Cincinnati Reds reliever Sam Moll (shoulder) latest Reds pitcher to land on injured list

NEW YORK – The only thing disappearing faster than days on the Cincinnati Reds schedule these days are pitchers on the active roster.

The latest pitcher to land on the 15-day injured list is reliever Sam Moll, the best performing left-hander in the Reds bullpen since he was acquired in a deadline trade last season.

Moll was diagnosed with an “impingement” in his shoulder, an issue he said he thinks began to arise three weeks ago in Toronto and worsened Friday after warming up for a possible appearance in an extra-inning loss. He went on the IL Sunday for the second time this season.

It’s similar to the soreness he experienced during his off-season throwing program and that kept him from starting the season on time, something he suggested might have been a result of pushing through some soreness late last season for a new team as the Reds fought for a playoff spot.

“I obviously don’t want it to snowball to what it did last offseason, where it screwed up my offseason as far as preparation and leading into obviously what I dealt with earlier this year,” said Moll, who pitched through it Saturday only to give up a go-ahead home run, then walk the next batter and hit the one after that before leaving the game.

Moll, who produced a 0.73 ERA down the stretch last year after the trade and a 2.63 ERA this year before Saturday, said he doesn’t know what the next step is for the shoulder and, perhaps obviously, considers it “not likely” he’ll pitch again this season.

The Reds recalled right-hander Casey Legumina to take Moll’s place in the bullpen before Sunday’s second game of a 10-day, 10-game, four-city road trip.
