Who is Anitta? Get to know the singer performing at the 2024 MTV VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards arrives Wednesday night, airing live from New York’s UBS Arena at 8 p.m. ET.

The night is packed with performances by this year's chart-topping artists, including Brazilian singer and songwriter Larissa de Macedo Machado, better known as Anitta .

The 31-year-old singer nominated in two categories this year already has two VMA wins under her belt. In 2022, she made history as the first Brazilian artist to earn an MTV Video Music Award after her song "Envolver" won in the Best Latin category. The following year, she won in the same category for her song "Funk Rave."

Wednesday night, Anitta faces artists that include Bad Bunny, Cardi B, Eminem and Taylor Swift in the categories of Best Latin and Best Editing. She carries two nominations in the former category: one for her song "Mil Veces" and another for her collaboration on “Bellakeo” with Peso Pluma. The music video for her song "Mil Veces" earned her her third nomination in the Best Editing category.

Who is Anitta?

Larissa de Macedo Machado, or Anitta, is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. Her stage name is from the character Anita in the 1948 Brazilian novel "Presença de Anita."

She began her music career in 2010 and released her self-titled debut album in 2013 after signing a recording contract with Warner Music Brasil. Her third studio album, "Bang," released in 2015 and garnered international success with its lead single of the same name topping the iTunes and Spotify charts. In 2017, the singer released her first single in English called "Switch," a collaboration with Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.

Anitta continued to attract international acclaim and struck mainstream success with her 2021 Spanish single "Envolver." The track topped the Global Top 200 on Spotify in 2022, making her the first Latin artist with a solo song to do so. On Sept. 6 this year, Anitta performed during the halftime show of the historic NFL Kickoff Game held in São Paulo, Brazil – the first opening weekend Friday game since 1970 and the league's first game played in South America.
