In fourth game back from the injured list, Brandon Williamson leaves with injury

After missing the first five months of the season with a shoulder injury, Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Brandon Williamson was off to a strong start in his first few games back from the injured list. But then on Tuesday, Williamson exited the game in the second inning with a left elbow strain.

Williamson had only allowed three earned runs in his first three appearances of 2024. On Tuesday, he allowed three runs in the first inning against the Atlanta Braves.

In the first inning, Williamson threw 34 pitches. Then in a 2-2 count in the second inning, he grabbed his left arm after throwing a pitch.

Williamson was one of the Reds' most consistent starters last year. As a rookie, he posted a 4.46 ERA in 23 starts. This spring, he was competing for the fifth spot in the Reds' rotation. His bid ended when he left a spring training game with a shoulder injury, and he didn't return to the big league mound until September.

During his time on the injured list, Williamson made significant changes as a part of an effort to improve his durability. He went through a workout program that increased his hip flexibility, and he added 15 pounds as a way to put less stress on his arm with every pitch.

The early returns were promising, but Tuesday's setback was a tough blow for a Reds team that already has four starting pitchers on the injured list.
