'Dateline' season 33 premiere to look at Katelyn Markham case. How to watch

The season 33 premiere of “Dateline,” airing Friday, will recap the 2011 disappearance and death of Katelyn Markham .

The two-hour special , titled “The Butterfly," will focus on Markham, a 21-year-old student who disappeared from her home in Fairfield in August 2011.

Markham was close to earning an art school degree and had plans to move to Colorado with her fiance, John Carter, when she disappeared 13 years ago. Her skeletal remains were found in April 2013 in Cedar Grove, Indiana.

But even after Markham’s remains were discovered, years continued to pass with no arrests. Although her death was ruled a homicide, a cause of death was never established due to the “severe decomposition" of her remains.

In March 2023, nearly a decade after Markham's discovery, Carter was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. The Enquirer reports that investigators felt something was "off" about Carter’s story from the beginning.

Carter, 36, pleaded guilty in June to involuntary manslaughter, admitting for the first time that he caused Markham's death . Prosecutors said Carter killed her by "physical violence and by force."

In July, Carter was sentenced to three years in prison for Markham’s death in Butler County Common Pleas Court − the maximum prison term possible.

Friday's "Dateline" episode will be reported by Andrea Canning, a former WCPO-TV reporter and anchor, according to WVXU . It will also feature interviews with Markham's father Dave, her sister Ally, investigator Paul Newton and WLWT-TV reporter Karin Johnson.
