When does the NBA season start? Dunks and 3-pointers are around the corner

Tuesday marks the start of October, which means one thing for hoops fans: the beginning of the NBA season .

The league is filled with storylines heading into the new year: How will Bronny James do on the Los Angeles Lakers? Can the Boston Celtics defend their title? Will the New York Knicks have a chance to take the Eastern Conference? And what about Ohio's Cleveland Cavaliers ? Could Evan Mobley take that next step alongside Donovan Mitchell?

It all starts in October, so here are dates to know for the NBA season.

When does the NBA preseason start?

The first NBA preseason games take place Oct. 4 . Here's a rundown of the first slate of games, all airing on NBA League Pass.

• Boston Celtics vs. Denver Nuggets, noon ET.
• Utah Jazz vs. New Zealand Breakers, 9 p.m. ET.
• Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30 p.m. ET.

When does the NBA regular season start?

The regular season starts Oct. 22 , when the Celtics play the Knicks at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT. The Lakers and Timberwolves play afterward at 10 p.m. ET, also on TNT.

Twenty teams then play the next day, Oct. 23, including the Cavaliers, who play the Toronto Raptors at 7:30 p.m. ET.
