Pete Rose quotes through the years lobbying for Baseball Hall of Fame consideration

    By Dave Clark, Cincinnati Enquirer,

Hit King and former Big Red Machine great Pete Rose, a Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer, formally requested on multiple occasions that his lifetime ban for gambling on baseball be lifted.

Rose acknowledged in recent years that he thought Cooperstown would only welcome him to the National Baseball Hall of Fame after he died, and after his death Monday at age 83 , Rose supporters will have to hope for a posthumous election and induction.

Here were some occasions Rose lobbied for reinstatement that could pave his way:

Nov. 2020: Rose says betting on baseball was 'only mistake I've ever made in my life'

"When I was betting on baseball when I got suspended, I was betting illegally on baseball. I make no more illegal bets in my life. That's why they have casinos," Rose told Jim Gray for his Fox News special, "Talking to GOATs with Jim Gray."

"I screwed up," Rose added. "I should have never (bet on baseball). That's the only mistake I've ever made in my life to be honest with you. And that's the biggest mistake. I would love to go to the Hall of Fame. Any player would. But as long as this heart is beating, I'm not going to go to the Hall of Fame."

Oct. 2019: Rose says lifetime ban has cost him $100 million in earnings

"I'm not bitter at all," Rose said during an interview on the No Filter Sports podcast. "I'm not gonna get on your show or anybody else's show and bitch about not being in the Hall of Fame. I'm the one who screwed up, I'm the one that's gonna live with it. Realistically, guys, me betting on my own team to win - which I did back in the '80s - cost me $100 million. I mean that's what it cost me. Because I'd have been managing the Reds for 30 years at three or four million (dollars) a year. And all the off-field stuff I'd have gotten. For people who say I haven't been punished enough, they don't know what the hell they're talking about. But I'm a perfect example: Don't break the rules, you're going to suffer the consequences.

"I'm done with it, OK. Because I know I have no chance to go into the Hall of Fame until I die. And that's fine. Because I'm the one that made the mistake. I don't know how Denny feels about his situation but baseball's always looked at gambling different than drugs or spouse beating or alcohol. They've always looked at that different than they did gambling. I know what happened in 1919. You know what happened in 1919. This is 2019. It's a lot different out there today than it was. … I've been a part of almost every Hall of Famer that's gone into the Hall of Fame since '69 - either played with him or played against him. So just like Denny, I have an idea of what the guys in the Hall of Fame did or didn't do. But I'm not worried about that because I'm gonna say this guy did that and I should be in the Hall of Fame because I did this. Because, you know, I just got tied up with the wrong commissioners. Bart Giamatti - he was a good guy. He did what he had to do. Then the next guy wouldn't do anything because of Bart Giamatti. Now this new guy, he won't do anything because of the other commissioners. It's like you can't step on the other commissioners that made a decision … and that's the situation I'm in. You know, I'll admit to you guys I bet on my team. I bet on them every night to win. That's how much confidence - and I was wrong. That's the confidence I had in my players. You know, it was wrong. But I tried to do everything every night to win the damn game. That's what you do as a manager. You try to win every frickin' game within the rules. And I was wrong and I wish I hadn't did it but I did."

June 2019: Rose says Johnny Bench wouldn't have made National Baseball Hall of Fame without him

"It don't bother me but you know Johnny Bench is one guy who should thank God I was born," Rose told FOX News ' "The Brian Kilmeade Show." "Because he never would have made the Hall of Fame if I wasn't born. … Because I'm the guy he knocked in a thousand times. You've got guys in front of you guys right behind you and you got to be responsible for everybody else involved.

"I'll continue going around the world we live in and telling everybody he's the greatest catcher of all times. I don't get tired of saying that because it's the truth. Now I can't help it the way he feels but I would think if he's a Cincinnati fan and he cares about the city of Cincinnati that he would probably want me to be in the Hall of Fame."

July 2014: Rose says he didn't alter statistics

Rose told CBS Sports Radio 's "TBD in the AM" that what he did was bad, "but PEDs are bad too," and that he "had nothing to do with altering the statistics of baseball.

Rose added that they'll probably wait until he's gone - "like they did with Ron Santo" - to induct him into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
