Radio host JonJon talks state of radio, says Cincinnati lucky to have so many local DJs

Jon Curl was in college in 2005 and working at a movie theater when he took advantage of sold-out shows to ad-lib comedy before the movie started.

He was just having fun, but someone asked him, "Have you ever thought about radio?"

That's exactly what he wanted to do and the comment inspired him. Curl got an internship at WKRQ-FM (101.9). And then a weekend shift. And then the night gig.

Eventually, in 2015, he took over the afternoon show for longtime host Brian Douglas.

Along the way, Curl met his wife, Toria Cannon , who did the station's traffic reports. Today, Curl is the host of "JonJon & Friends," iHeartMedia's KISS 107 (107.1) popular 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. show where every day new guests are sitting along side him.

Curl, 37, of Alexandria, Ky., joined The Enquirer's "That's So Cincinnati" podcast to talk about his career and how radio has changed. Curl can be found most nights and weekends hosting local charity events.

"Cincinnati is really a unique place," he said. "Most large markets don't have as many radio personalities as Cincinnati. There's plenty of food on the table for all of us in this town. And that's what's beautiful about Cincinnati."
