Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow avoided a concussion on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Following the 17-7 win over the New York Giants , Burrow explained what happened after he took a big time hit that forced him to undergo medical attention on the sideline.

Burrow’s head hit the turf hard when Giants’ defensive end Brian Burns sacked him on third down. He was immediately brought into the blue medical tent to undergo evaluation for a concussion.

“They just came and told me and told they needed to evaluate me for a concussion,” Burrow said after the game. “It was news to me (because) I felt fine, I just had the wind knocked out of me a little bit.”

    NFL concussion protocol

The NFL has implemented a serious protocol to ensure player safety is prioritized when it comes to concussions over the last few years. If a medical professional involved in any aspect of the game believes a player needs to be checked for a concussion, a thorough evaluation will be performed.

A player can’t be cleared to return to the game unless they pass the neurological exam performed by an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant.

Burrow’s status will be closely monitored over the next few days but since he was able to go back into the game, it means he passed all of the initial tests to prove he didn’t suffer a concussion on the hit.

Will Joe Burrow play vs Cleveland Browns

At 2-4 on the year now with the win over New York, the Bengals are looking to stack another win against Cleveland next Sunday. In order to do so, they’ll need a better performance from the offense. And Burrow expects that to be the case.

“We’re 2-4, we’re trying to find ourselves, we’re trying to find wins,” Burrow said. “We know we have to be better going forward.”
