La Salle senior Max Welter's tough catch against Elder makes SportsCenter Top 10 Plays

Max Welter had only three catches for the La Salle football team Friday night at Elder.

Two of them were some of the best any local fan will see this season as the Lancers defeated Elder 35-24 in The Pit for their first Greater Catholic League-South win since 2020.

Welter, a 6-foot-3 senior, had a 26-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to give La Salle a 21-17 lead with four minutes to go. The ball was deflected up in the air as he fell to his knees in the end zone, but he kept his concentration as he caught the ball while on the ground.

While that one caught plenty of attention, another challenging catch he made for a 44-yard gain made it onto SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays Friday night at No. 3.

On that one, La Salle QB Pat McLaughlin threw a long pass to Welter, who reached out with his left hand and caught it while backpedaling and being pressured by an Elder defender.

Welter’s athleticism helped McLaughlin complete 19-of-21 passes for 260 yards and two TDs against a tough Elder defense. La Salle finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and unofficially has the No. 2 seed behind Anderson in Division II, Region 8.

The Lancers are projected to host Monroe (4-6) in the first round of the DII playoffs next week and will play at home in round two if they advance. They would face the winner between Kings and Withrow.
