City: RAGBRAI Arrives Next Week
According to the City of Ottumwa, the riders of RAGBRAI LI will arrive next Thursday for an overnight stay. On July 25, the riders will arrive into town from Rock Bluff Road, onto Blackhawk Road, turning onto North Quincy Avenue, and ride the trail behind the Ottumwa 8 Theater to arrive at the Greater Ottumwa Park. Campers will be available for the participants on both sides of the park.

Tractor pull at fairgrounds in Trenton set for July 27
A tractor pull is set to take place at the North Central Missouri Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 27th at 7 pm. The fairgrounds are located at 1415 Oklahoma Ave. The event will feature a beer garden, with food concessions provided by the Lions Club. General admission for the event is priced at $15 per adult and $5 per child aged 6-10 years old. Children 5 years old and under will be admitted free of charge.
Grand Junction summerfest set for first weekend in August
50107 Summerfest will be held on August 2 and August 3 in Grand Junction. Most of the fun will happen in the old school lot, unless noted. Festivities start at 4 p.m. on Friday night with the opening of the beer tent. Gotcha Games Carnival, food vendors (Borrachos & Kona Ice), Greene County Cattlemen and yard games will start at 5 p.m. The carnival is the same group that was at the Bell Tower Festival. Final Pleasant Prairie Threshing Bee to be held this month
After 25 years, Nick Foster will hold the final Pleasant Prairie Threshing Bee on July 27. Foster is the president of the Greene County Historical Society, a farmer in Jefferson, and he collects antique tractors and farming equipment. Foster described a threshing machine as essentially a stationary combine that separates the grain from the stalk and chaff.
Iowa Town Didn’t Get Warning Sirens Ahead of Damaging Tornado
Weather sirens are supposed to warn communities when a tornado is near. But sometimes severe storms form too quickly for them to be used effectively. Residents of an Iowa town learned the hard way this week that the outdoor sirens are not perfect. The National Weather Service's Des Moines office confirmed to the Des Moines Register that it did not issue a tornado warning until five minutes AFTER the twister had touched down in the city of Urbandale. Multiple residents on 80th and 82nd street in Urbandale, where the tornado did some of its worst damage, told the Register that they did not hear sirens ahead of Monday's storm.

The Register's sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on his Sept. 22, 1959, arrival at the Des Moines airport to visit his friend, seed entrepreneur Roswell Garst, in Coon Rapids. Jefferson’s Newest Police Officer is a Carroll Native
The Jefferson Police Department recently hired its seventh officer. Trevor Hansen was approved by the City Council at the June 25th meeting as the newest police officer. The 2022 Carroll High School graduate also has an associate degree in criminal justice from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny and recently worked as a jailer in the Polk County Jail for 1.5 years. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio one of the main reasons for going into a law enforcement career was from when he grew up with domestic violence. Hansen explains why he chose Jefferson to be an officer.
