Balloon Glow is a no go. Popular summer event not happening at ex-Coney Island property

Balloon Glow − a popular hot air balloon and fireworks display − is not happening at Coney Island this year despite advertisements for the event on the shuttered amusement park's website , according to a spokesperson for the property owner.

Before the park's closure in December, the event was set for Wednesday evening with 10 fully inflated hot air balloons tethered down at Coney Island.

While demolition began in March , Coney Island still hosted the 57th annual Summerfair Cincinnati arts fair. That is not the case for Balloon Glow.

It is definitely not happening this year and the park's new owners have been trying to get information about the event taken off Coney Island's website, said Rosemarie Moehring, a spokesperson for Music and Event Management Inc.

In December, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and MEMI bought the 100-acre Coney Island for $8 million and announced plans to construct a $118 million music campus. MEMI, which operates the adjacent Riverbend and PNC Pavilion, will construct a 21,000-seat stage to replace the 40-year-old Riverbend stage.

MEMI plans to continue booking smaller acts as usual at PNC Pavilion and the old Riverbend stage will be used for festival-type events when multiple stages are needed.

As for what will remain of the historic amusement park, the front gates and Lake Como by the entrance will stay, as well as the grove along the river where Summerfair and other events have been held, symphony leadership previously told The Enquirer.

The symphony has also said it will consider saving the dance hall Moonlite Gardens, though the price tag of $5.7 million to rehabilitate it after years of sitting vacant would make preserving it difficult, they said.

The new venue is expected to open sometime in the spring of 2026.
